Overview
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a major public research university in Malaysia, established in 1969 and originally known as the University of Penang. It has grown into one of Malaysia’s top institutions for higher learning with more than 34,000 students from around 80+ countries, and campuses across Penang, Nibong Tebal (Engineering Campus), and Kelantan (Health Campus). The university adopts a multidisciplinary School system rather than traditional faculties, fostering cross-disciplinary learning and a broad academic scope from sciences and engineering to social sciences and arts. USM also hosts 17 dedicated research centres and plays a major role in regional and global academic partnerships.
USM is recognised domestically and internationally for academic and research excellence. It was the first Malaysian university selected for the government’s Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX), a status that supports world-class standards and institutional autonomy.
