Save the Children UK has been operational in Indonesia since 1999 in response to the widespread of inter community conflict in the country resulted from economic – socio – political changes, both in the central and local government. Although rooted in different causes, various conflicts in Indonesia led to similar problems: many people were killed and a large number of children and their families were displaced. SCUK’s initial emergency interventions focused on ensuring children’s access to quality basic education, the safety and protection of children affected by conflict and the mitigation of conflict between IDP and host communities. At present, since the situation in the majority of SCUK program areas has changed and the extent to which conflict directly affects children and communities has lessened, the program has changed emphasis and adopted longer-term developmental approaches to provide direct support to vulnerable children as well as to build the capacity of duty bearers, primarily in the education and child protection sectors.  The changes also directed to developing and implementing advocacy initiatives at both national and provincial levels. The SCUK Indonesia program is currently implementing programs in 10 provinces of Indonesia. A five year education and child protection thematic plan are in the process of development.
