3/8/2019 12:00:00 AM

Faculty of Law, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia
Proudly invites you to our Public Lecture on Countering Fake News: To Regulate or Not to Regulate?
Described by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as “Digital Wildfire” and an emerging risk that the world is facing, fake news is inevitably a global issue that needs to be tackled. Fake news has impacted a spectrum of areas such as democratic process, security, the economy and society as a whole. The election of President Donald Trump and Brexit were arguably influenced by fake news. In countries such as Bangladesh and Myanmar,  the spread of fake news have created violence and racial conflicts. Meanwhile, in India and Mexico, fake news on WhatsApp platform have even caused human lives. Recently, there are even fake news spread by anti-vaccine movements that may put children at risk. This talk will discuss the nature and different types of fake news/disinformation and the magnitude of its impact globally. Subsequently, the discussion will look at the measures already adopted by countries and companies as well as measures in the pipeline to address this growing threat. As the European Union (EU) has developed a strategic and comprehensive approach on this matter, the talk will give emphasis on the EU’s Action plan. This will be followed by an analysis as to whether regulation is required to counter this emerging global risk.
