Title
DESIGNING A PRE-UNIVERSITY ENGLISH SYLLABUS FOR
GENERAL ACADEMIC PURPOSES
Abstract
English
is the international language most widely taught in Indonesian Education from
the primary to the higher level. At the university level, English competence is
mainly required for academic reasons, such as comprehending reading materials,
understanding lectures or seminars, and presenting a report, as well as the
requirements for passing the subject. However, many university students still
need help comprehending the learning materials provided in English due to
inadequate understanding from the previous school. This situation urges the
researcher to do this study to design a syllabus for English for Academic
General Purposes (EGAP), which can be used to help the pre-university be more
prepared for the learning process at the university level. Two research
questions are offered for this study: (1) What are undergraduate students' general academic
needs for English? (2) What is the design of the English syllabus for
pre-university students to comprehend the English general academics? This study
uses qualitative research with a needs analysis as the primary method to see
the Present Situation Analysis (PSA), Learning Situation Analysis (LSA), and
Target Situation Analysis (TSA). The analysis of the learner's needs uses
triangulation for the analysis from the survey, interview, and classroom
observation. It involves 116 participants in the survey, ten students for the
interview, and three classroom observations. The findings show that most
pre-university students realized that English is essential in the learning
process at the university level. The students considered they had sufficient
English proficiency yet needed help comprehending the materials related to
academic genres. The most important English skills needed are reading,
listening, and speaking, including vocabulary and grammar. Based on the
learners’ needs analysis, the present study proposes an integrated syllabus
that combines a content-based, skills-based, and genre-based syllabus. It is
designed for one semester, which consists of 14 meetings. The syllabus proposes
a big theme, ‘Life at Campus,’ divided into 12 topics related to academics and
life at university and two assessment sections. The proposed syllabus aims to
help students become motivated to learn English with contextual learning related
to campus, become familiar with it, and be prepared for the English academic
context and life at university.
