Title

TRANSLANGUAGING SPACE AND IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION IN QUORA

Abstract

This thesis explored the dynamic interplay of language, space, and identity in digital communication, specifically focusing on the platform Quora. Translanguaging, the fluid use of multiple languages within a single discourse, was examined within this diverse, multilingual space. While existing translanguaging studies mainly focus on East Asia and mainstream socialmedia, there is a notable research gap on Quora, particularly within the Indonesian context. Previous Quora studies mainly focus on English language teaching and user interactions, leaving the nuanced dynamics of translanguaging space in Indonesianthemed posts unexplored. This thesis addresses this gap by investigating the interplay between translanguaging space and identity on Quota within the Indonesian context. The research seeksto uncover the intricate connections between language, culture, and identity in online spaces by analyzing linguistic choices, spatial interactions, and their implications for identity negotiation. Exploring whether Indonesian-themed Quora posts created translanguaging spaceand how this space enables users to express their identity, the thesis holds potential significancefor informing policies, enhancing cultural understanding, and contributing to a broader discussion on digital communication and linguistic diversity. To reach the objectives of this researcher, the researcher used the lurking method by Addeo (2022) and discourse analysis toanalyze the data. Based on the posts and comments on seven themes, thisthesis'sresults provedthat translanguaging practices proven by translanguaging strategies constructed translanguaging space. The findings of this thesis also proved that the translanguaging space enables Quora users to demonstrate their identity through translanguaging practices and sharingtheir knowledge and experiences on Quora.
