EXCURSION AND FIELD STUDY : MARINE TOURISM

06/18/2015 00:00:00

On the 1st – 3rd of May, 2015, as one part of the Tourism Planning (HOS 302) class activites, students from the Hospitality and Tourism Management of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia had done research on marine tourism located at Dusun Pandansari, Brebes. The advance team, Ardi, Christian, and Vania arrived two days earlier to get ready all the things needed at Dusun Pandansari.

The rest of the students from the Tourism Planning class, together with Ms. Titis Puspitarini and Mrs. Citra Laturiuw are gathered at Gambir Train Station on May 1st and our train departed at 11.15 in the afternoon.  You can see the excitement on our faces when the train started to move. We started talking straight away to each other about our trip to Brebes and how curious we were about what we will do there.  The trip from Jakarta to Brebes took approximately about four hours. We arrived at Brebes Station around four  o’clock in the afternoon.  Our friends from the advance team and the community of Mangrove Sari from Dukuh Pandansari were there to greet us and pick us up as well.   When we reached our basecamp, straight away we were divided to groups and taken to our designated home stay where we will stay for the next three days and two nights.  It was a wonderful experience to be able to jump straight into their life so we could know about their culture and their daily live.  We really got to know our host and their family.  They accept us as one of their family members and they are all very kind, modest and caring people. We gathered back again at the base camp at seven in the evening and officially started our field study.  We were introduced to the prominent members from the Dukuh Pandansari who would also be helping us during our field trip study.   Around ten in the evening, we finished our meeting and went back to our new home.

The next day was the most exciting day among the three days we stayed there.  Each of our groups went to different places according to their research to observe and gather data.  There were five groups with different research topic: milkfish embankment, mangrove, Dukuh Pandansari products, water activities and home stay.  Around noon, we all gathered at the dock near the village where we will go to Pasir Pantai to have our lunch.  We went by boat there, through the mangrove trees.  They prepared a delicious meal for us which consisted of seafood taken fresh from their village. After lunch, we continued our data gathering.  We met back at the base camp at seven in the evening to present our proposal and findings to the prominent village community and ask for feedback from them.  It was a tiring day but it also was a great and fun day.

Our last day was quite sad because we were going back to Jakarta. We had such a great time there and learned a lot of so many things that we could never encountered in Jakarta. The spirit and motivation of the community of Dukuh Pandansari to want to developed and improved their village through tourism really touched me and made a great impact not just to me, but to all of us as well.  With a sad heart, we left Brebes Station at 16.41 pm.  Our dinner on the train was delightful, a lunchbox made by the Dukuh Pandansari people.  While we ate, we reminisced about our great time there. We arrived in Gambir Station around ten at night.  All of us were exhausted but we would never forget our experience of a lifetime.
