National Seminar on Legal Aspect of Intellectual Property Rights in Biotechnology

3/27/2006 12:00:00 AM

Background
The role of intellectual property rights (IPR) has become a key issue in agricultural and resource economics over the past two decades. IPR concerns have been raised by interests from both industrialized and less industrialized countries. Different forms of IPRs include patents, trademarks, industrial designs or copyrights; each of which has different requirements and grants different legal status. Universities, cooperatives and other public and non-profit institutions now have the option of licensing or selling research outputs in the biotechnology area, rather than giving their results away for free. As the scope and power of IPRs in biotechnology has grown, their international reach has expanded. These developments raise many fascinating and important issues: optimal patent design and licensing; as well as the implications of IPRs under cumulative innovation, typical for agriculture and modern biotechnology. Considering complexity of the issues, active interdisciplinary discussion, especially between biotechnology and law department should be encouraged.

Objective
In this seminar, we would like to provide an overview and fundamental understanding of the various types of intellectual properties (IPs), such as copyright, trademarks, patents, designs and trade secrets. Participants will also learn how to protect, manage and exploit this IPs inline with the national or international legal aspects.
