Theme: Navigating our Cyber-Worlds: Multiple Perspective Approaches to Communication

Background

The increasing usage and ubiquity of online media technology presents many opportunities and benefits, especially for marginalised communities that previously had limited access to information. Several sources report a marked surge of online activity particularly in the Asia Pacific region, many in countries where the infrastructure and regulatory environment have not kept apace. The access to overwhelming amount of information by massive numbers of the population provides opportunities for many private and public-sector representatives. For corporations, they can leverage their brands to new markets. For government, they can offer services and key government information more efficiently. But the open access to information without the necessary media literacy and regulatory frameworks can also pose major risks.

Communication practitioners find themselves in the middle of these challenges and opportunities. Engaging with virtual and real stakeholders require various skills and knowledge. Moreover, handling crises in the digital space take new meaning. For instance, cyber crises represent new forms of engagement with often ‘unseen’ actors.  At the same time employees and communities become more empowered to express their voices as they are armed with digital media technologies.

Keynote Speaker:

Prof.  Anne Gregory :  "Big Picture of Cyber-world: PR Dialog"

Plenary:

SPEAKER 1 : perspective from practitioner (Agung Laksamana) - "THE CYBER WORLD CHALLENGES: HOW PR PRACTICE EVOLVES"

  • This session aims to provide a contextual base for  audiences as well as other speakers about what happens with PR in the cyber world ----- from practitioner‘s perspective.
  • The speaker should provide pictures on how PR  practitioners perceive the situation in the cyber world, how PR practice evolves, and how practitioners keep up with  challenges in the Cyber World. This will be good as well if the speaker raises issues on big data and PR practice, as well as hoax and corporate reputation.

SPEAKER 2 : perspective from researcher & academic (Marianne D. Sison) - "THE NEED FOR ADVANCED PR RESEARCH AND EDUCATION IN THE CYBER WORLD"

  • This session helps the audience to understand
    • how PR  researchers and educators perceive the cyber world,
    • how PR  researchers and educators identify needs for a more advance research and education
    • research trend to understand and face the challenges in the cyber world

SPEAKER 3: perspective from PR/ Communication Consultant & Academic (Nia Sarinastiti) -- "IMPROVING PR COMPETENCE IN THE CYBER WORLD : EDUCATORS AND PRACTITIONERS COLLABORATIVE APPROACH"

  • This session aims to show an alternative insight on how a collaborative approach between practitioners and educators/ researchers can provide a better understanding towards PR dynamic in the cyber world. The speaker will also describe how PR consultants need the help of researchers/educators to improve PR competence or to provide a better service, etc.

DISCUSSION SESSION: ETHICS IN PUBLIC RELATIONS ACADEMIC WORK

SPEAKER: Ann Thebaut, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Santa Fe College

  • The speaker will focus on the importance of ethics in conducting PR research or developing publications.  In addition, the speaker emphasizes on how we need to be conscious of others in developing messages that may lead to defamation and libel, especially in the era of social media use. In short, the speaker will provide guidelines on how PR academicians would have to make judgements on “the right thing to do”, not just “doing things right”.

WORKSHOP SESSION: THE VALUE OF ACADEMICIANS AS COMMUNICATION AUDITORS

SPEAKER: Andre Hardjana, Professor of Communication (Atma Jaya & University of Indonesia)

  • The speaker will highlight the growing role of communication audits that are conducted by academicians.  Many organizations – profit and non-profit – seek independent auditors to assess their communication activities, internally or external, as a means to provide objective input. In this digital era, it also means that types of audit need to be verified by people who have extensive research experiences using current technologies.
