International Conference on Corporate and Marketing Communication

“Creating a Society of 5.0 through Digital Transformation”

Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia

Tuesday, July 9, 2019 – Yustinus Building 15th floor

Background

When we state digital transformation, many people still think of social media.  It is not.  Digital is fundamentally changing the way businesses and governments operate—from how they interact with customers, citizens and suppliers, to how they manage their employees. New digital technologies enable not only greater integration and flexibility than ever before, but also the ability for employees to have a greater share of voice and ability to participate in defining and even creating their own work experiences.

As digital technology advances, it’s helping many aspects of life.  Companies are using technology to meet people wherever they are, at any moment in time.  The digital saturation of reality has granted companies exceptional capabilities. They can understand their customers with a new depth of granularity.  They have more channels than ever to reach those consumers.  With many companies already starting down the digital path, there are more digital ecosystems and more potential partners to help companies create holistic experiences.

If we look on the vision of Japan in creating its Society 5.0, that the Fourth Industrial Revolution is creating new values and services one after another, bringing a richer life to all becomes the main goal.  Again, it is not about social media.  In Society 5.0, any product or service will be optimally delivered to people and tailored to their needs. At the same time, Society 5.0 will help to overcome chronic social challenges such as an ageing population, social polarization, depopulation and constraints related to energy and the environment.

In Society 5.0, autonomous vehicles and drones will bring goods and services to people in depopulated areas. Customers will be able to choose the size, color and fabric of their clothing online directly from the garment factory before having it delivered by drone. A doctor will be able to consult her patients in the comfort of their own home via a special tablet. While she examines them from a distance, a robot may be vacuuming the carpet. At the nursing home down the road, another robot may be helping to care for the aged. In the nursing home’s kitchen, the refrigerator will be monitoring the condition of stocked foods to cut down on waste. The town will be powered by energy supplied in flexible and decentralized ways to meet the inhabitants’ specific needs. On the outskirts, autonomous tractors will be toiling in the fields while, downtown, advanced cyber-physical systems will be maintaining vital infrastructure and standing by to replace retiring technicians and craftspeople, should there not be enough young people to fill the gap.  It’s all about the Human + Machine, collaborating in a way for the prosperity of humans themselves, making communication easier for everyone.
