Geriatric & gerontology, addiction medicine, and tropical medicine are several cores of medical society, which are now becoming global challenges faced by the entire world, including developing countries. Notably, Indonesia is experiencing one of the fastest trends in the Southeast Asia countries with its aged population exceeding every year. The decline in functional reserve organs of the elderly people develop some kinds of diseases and have more complications from so-called mild problems in adult population. Functional abilities, independence and quality life issues are of great concern.
Additionally, in adolescent and adult population, prevalence of drugs addiction is continuously increasing. The medical concept of addiction as a chronic relapsing brain disease is not widely accepted, even by medical professional. Addiction is also related with psychiatric comorbidities and infectious diseases, especially HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. We need rigorous attention to the increment of negative impacts of drugs addiction. Furthermore, Indonesia as a tropical country has to deal with communicable disease not only in drugs addicted population but also in the general population too.
Malaria, HPV, and influenza are several infectious diseases that still become the major of health problems in Indonesia. The sense of urgency among people about this critical condition is leading to diverse, not only on medical-forum, but also social-policy discussions.
For the past 3 years, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia had mentioned urban health as the excellence of its school of medicine, with geriatric & gerontology, addiction medicine, and tropical medicine as the cores of studies.
