Expand Your Horizon: Enhancing English Language Through Studying Abroad

As the continuation of sharing information regarding IISMA (Indonesian International Study Mobility Award) to students of Unika Atma Jaya, another virtual info session was held for students of the Department of English Language Education. The Info Session was held on Friday, 11th March 2022. IISMA itself is a scholarship program provided by government for college students to experience studying at top universities abroad for one semester.

The virtual info session was opened by Mrs. Christina Eli Indriyani, M.Hum as the Secretary of English Language Education Department. In her speech, she stressed on how the scholarship giving opportunities for students to achieve their dream while also stepping out of their comfort zone. Mrs. Indri also mentioned that students will have to adapt in a new environment and culture, so they have to be open-minded and open-hearted to accept all those new things. “Wherever you study, whoever you study with, or which university you study at, experiences will make you sturdy and strong. You make yourself to be more mature, creative, think critically. Ask yourself this: do you want to stay at your comfort zone right now or get out from your comfort zone and try new things which still needs to be explore. Never get tired chasing your dream” said Mrs. Indri.

The main session was delivered by Mr. Ignatius Reyner Giovanni as the Mobility Coordinator of the International Office at Unika Atma Jaya. Reyner said that as students should create the right opportunity for themselves, they should aim to get many experiences in their years in university. “You have so many opportunities and provided so many facilities. There are also facilities in form of privilege; you must look for an opportunity and make the opportunity where you can get many experiences” said Reyner.

One of the chances available is IISMA, with many chances for experiences in culture exchange, networking, train their English language, and acknowledgements from universities abroad. All the experiences are relevant in nowadays’ situation, with the development of technology and industry 4.0, emancipated learning, internationalization, and how people are living with COVID-19 Pandemic. IISMA may also provide students with many new competencies that weren’t developed in local university. There are many important requirements and aspects stressed on and underline, including registration criteria, what the program covers, documents needed for the process, and the timeline from application, departure, until returning home.

Reyner added that it’s important for students to give their best effort when applying for IISMA. He said “Success is where preparation and opportunity meet. You must put your effort, to communicate, to insert many documents required. If you do each step well, for sure you will, I hope, succeed, at least in the internal selection. If not, you will be an average people just like what Mrs. Indri said: Don’t you want to leave your comfort zone?”
