This study explores anticipatory grief among husbands of breast cancer terminal illness patients. It is assumed that the husbands usually experience grief even before the death of their partners.
Using a qualitative approach, semi structured interviews were conducted for the participants, who are the husbands of breast cancer terminal illness patients receiving palliative treatment, 45-55 years old, who have children living with them and have a permanent job.
The finding shows that even though all of the participants had a partner with similar conditions in terms of their illness stage, however their experienced with anticipatory grief were still unique. Physical conditions of their wifes, the religious values and social support were identified as substantial factors influencing participants’ experiences. These factors need to be examined further in future studies related to this issue. Looking at the experiences of other family members, such as children, mother or wife of the terminal illness patients would also be benefit to increase the richness of anticipatory grief studies.
