Extensive Reading Workshop

English Education Department (PBI),Unika Atma Jaya, in collaboration with ER Foundation and Global Books, held the Extensive Reading Workshop on July 7, 2018, for English teachers, English teaching practicioners, and those who loved reading and believed in the importance of reading. The workshop, which was attended by around 150 people, was delivered by Dr. Willy Renandya from Nanyang Technological University, Ibu Yuseva A. Iswandari, M.Ed. from Sanatha Dharma University, who was also the chair of IERA, and Prof. Rob Waring from Notre Dame Seishin University, who was also the Executive Board Member of the Extensive Reading Foundation.

 

As stated by Dr. Renandya, reading is essential in foreign language learning because it is the only way foreign language learners can get more exposure to the target language. Foreign language learners will never be able to master the target language if they are not exposed enough to linguistic inputs. Therefore, in this workshop, the speakers encouraged English teachers in Indonesia to implement the extensive reading program in their classrooms. In addition, they discussed some techniques to integrate extensive reading in the lessons, tips to choose the right reading materials, and some theories that support the use of the extensive reading to TESL/TEFL.
