BRIEF RESEARCH PROJECT

Penelitian Kerjasama PKPM Unika Atma Jaya dengan Monash University

Project Title

Determinants of Indonesian labour migration to Malaysia

Purpose of Project

Labour migration from Indonesia to Malaysia represents the second-largest, long-term international migration flow, overshadowed only by that from Mexico to the USA. While migration studies have focussed to some extent on Indonesian migration to Malaysia, the literature is dominated by studies on the experiences of labour migrants during the migration process and neglect those factors that inform the initial decision to migrate. This study will propose a theoretical model of migration decision factors that will be empirically tested in a sample of Indonesian migrant workers. Results will inform further development of Indonesian and Malaysian labour migration policy.  Methodology Interviews with approximately 500 migrant workers in Indonesia who was in OR/AND is planning to go to Malaysia will be conducted to achieve the above research purpose. Participants will be asked to rate on a scale of 1 – 5 (1 = not at all to 5 = very much) to what extent each of the hypothesised push and pull factors contributed to their decision to migrate to Malaysia. Participants will also be asked to provide demographic details for statistical analyses purposes. We will use structural equation modelling to analyse the proposed hypotheses among the quantitative data; and NVivo to analyse underlying themes of the supporting qualitative data (if any). Data will be collected between July and December 2009.
