Abstract :
BACKGROUND: Involving natural food ingredients in controlling blood glucose in diabetic patients has been widely studied. However, there is little information about the effect of the ingredients on improvement of clinical, laboratory, and gut function markers.
OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to examine the effect of Job‘s tears-enriched yoghurt on weight, fasting blood glucose, GLP-I, and Calprotectin in patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
METHODS: Sixty male and female subjects with T2DM participating in this study were divided in two groups; received yoghurt (control group/C) and Job‘s tears-enriched yoghurt (treatment group lT). Subjects use metformin only were allowed. Job‘s tears seed was extracted using a standard process.: Height and weight were measured. Laboratory examination for fasting blood glucose, GLP-I, and calprotectin were performed using standard methods. Appropiate statistical analysis tests were applied to examine variables change within and between groups. Significancy was set at p < 0.05.
RESULTS: Characteristics between groups were comparable. Weight and FBG reduced significantly in bothgroups (weight in C; 64.5 vs 63.5 kg, p=O.Ol; FBG in C; 130.7 vs 128.7 mgldL, p=0.04, weight in T, 64.8 vs 63.1 kg, p=O.Ol, FBG in T; 129.2 vs 110.8 mgldL, p=0.03) with greater reduced in T group (weight; -1.01 vs -1.68 kg, p=0.02, FBG; -1.30 vs -18.1 mgldL, p < 0.0 I). Calprotectin decreased significantly in T group (36.1 vs 23.4 ug/g, P = 0.02) but change was not significant different with C group.
CONCLUSION: Adding Job‘s tear could enhance the effect of yoghurt in reducing weight and FBG in T2DM patients.
