The Importance of Culture in Friendship: Studying Abroad

When students study abroad in a foreign country, the first thing they have to understand is that there is a difference of culture between their current place and their own country. If they are unable to adapt with new cultures as they study and befriend other people, it may cause problems for themselves for days onward. Such obstacles must be faced by 5 students from Communication Studies when they were doing student exchange to Germany. They study Journalism and Public Relations at Westphalian University of Applied Sciences.

These students interacted and got along with students from many countries there; including Turkey, Romania, and Mexico. In this info session, they shared about many things they experienced when interacting with said students. For example, they just knew that students and Mexicans in general didn’t eat fried rice along with Krupuk, but with avocado. The combination of avocado with fried rice is uncommon in Indonesia. They also told the story about the work ethic of German students, how serious and different they are from most of the students in Indonesia, along with many unique and interesting stories.

The info session was opened by the Dean of Faculty of Business Administration and Communication Dr. Eko Widodo. Acted as the discussion leader was Mrs. El Chris Natalia M.Si as the lecturer of Intercultural Communication class. The moderator of this info session was Mr. Ignatius Reyner S.T. and the students who become the speaker were: Zefanya Aldriana, Celina Putri, Jessica Ardelia, Angga Prasetya dan Cassandra Naomi.
