Guest Lecturer: The Role of the Malaysian Government in Helping SMEs to Survive during the COVID-19 Pandemic

A collaboration between the School of Business Administration, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, and Universiti Sains Malaysia

The current COVID-19 pandemic has caused many problems for SMEs worldwide, and Malaysia and Indonesia are no exception to this state of affairs. Most SMEs are facing difficult times not only in making money or simply remaining in business, but also must deal with shrinking markets, slowing or vanishing demand, and much less expenditure on goods and services by consumers. For the majority of countries, SMEs make up the largest number of businesses and they contribute significantly to the economy of a nation by providing jobs, innovation, and strengthening the local economic base.

Given the strategic role of SMEs, governments around the globe have taken serious, dramatic and comprehensive measures to ensure SMEs continue to function as best they can during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, Malaysia’s government has announced a special package to help SMEs remain viable. This session shares the experiences of the Malaysian government in implementing strategies and measures to protect SMEs from crises triggered by the COVID-19 disaster.
