International education in the Netherlands started in the 1950s when specialized institutes fot international education were established. Their main objective has been to offer high quality of education to foreign students, especially those coming from developing countries and countries in transition. Nowadays, there are approximately 350 specialized courses designed primarily for master‘s and Ph.D degrees following the Anglo-Saxon system. The courses are provided by institutes of international education, universities, and institution of higher professional education (Nuffic, 1997).

Leiden, Amsterdam, Groningen, and Utrecht Universities are four of the state universities which offer master‘s and Ph.D programs in various fields to foreign students. At Leiden University there are 7 master‘s programs and 4 Ph.D programs, at Amsterdam University 12 master‘s programs and 5 Ph.D programs, at Groningen University 6 master‘s programs and 12 Ph.D programs, while at Utrecht University there are 13 master‘s programs and 6 Ph.D programs.

Although those four universities are realtively the oldest and best state universities in the Netherlands, their names and educational programs seem not strongly popular amongst the undergraduate students in Indonesia, This study is specifically designed to know how great the interest of the Indonesian students is pursuing their postgraduate study to those four sate univesities in the Netherlands.

This study covered the final year students and faculty members of state and private universities in Jakarta, Bandung (West Java), Yogyakarta (Central Java), and Surabaya (East Java).

A self-administrated questionnaire was used to gather the information from the selected students and faculty members of the above mentioned universities.

The data are presented in frequency tabulation. Besides, cross tabulations are made to see whether there are close associations between variables. From about 204 cross tabulations, there are only 22 which are highly significant.
