English Education Department (PBI), Unika Atma Jaya, held a seminar, titled "Culture and Identity in English Language Teaching", on July 23, 2018. The seminar was attended by English teachers, lecturers, undergraduates and graduate students from various institutions in Jabodetabek.

 

According to Prof. Cynthia Douglas, the speaker of this seminar: In addition to incorporating the component of L2 culture into ELT materials, English teachers should also embrace the L2 learners’ native cultures and acknowledge their identities. Marginalizing the native cultures of the L2 learners in ELT classrooms can be a demotivating factor for English language learning.
