INDONESIAN AND FOREIGN ONLINE NEWS PORTALS VIEWPOINTS ON EU-INDONESIA TRADE DISPUTE: A TRANSITIVITY AND STANCE ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the linguistic strategy used by Antara, an Indonesian media outlet, and The Diplomat, a foreign media outlet based in Washington, D.C., to report on the issue of trade dispute between the Indonesian government and the European Union, a multinational bloc. Using the approach of Transitivity according to Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) and elements of stance according to Hyland (2005), the research explores how both approaches are triangulated to discover the stance taken by both media portals on the issue. For the purpose of this study, 20 (twenty) articles (ten from each outlet) published between November 2021 and October 2025 are analyzed. The findings revealed significant differences on how both media portals portray the issue. Antara, considering its historical background and current status, shows the Indonesian government is a more positive light, with phrases like “Indonesia leads 17 nations against discriminatory EU Deforestation Law” and “Indonesia won (the lawsuit) at the WTO for palm oil-based biofuel”. On the other hand, The Diplomat, catering to an international audience with worldwide readership, uses a more analytical and balanced approach to portray the issue, with phrases such as “The EU reported that progress has been made in the areas of State-Owned Enterprises” and “…Brussels should…accelerate an agreement by opening its single market to more sustainable palm oil products”. Sociocultural aspect is also discussed in brief to enrich the understanding, with the ultimate objective to answer the research question. As conclusion, Antara and The Diplomat utilize different approach, one ideological while the other more balanced in reporting the issue of trade dispute between Indonesia and the European Union.
