Title
TRANSLINGUAL NEGOTIATION STRATEGIES IN MEDIA DISCOURSE
OF
INDONESIAN GLOBAL PUBLIC
FIGURES
ABSTRACT
Translingual Negotiation Strategies in Media
Discourse of Indonesian Global Public Figures Translingual negotiation in media
discourse remains underexplored, particularly in the Indonesian context. This
study examines how Indonesian global public figures apply translingual
negotiation strategies in media interviews and what interactional functions
those strategies serve. Two research questions guided the analysis: how
translingual negotiation strategies are applied at the macro and micro levels,
and what interactional functions they serve. A qualitative discourse analysis
of interview data from NIKI, Rich Brian, and Nadya Hutagalung was conducted
using Canagarajah's (2013) translingual negotiation framework, Du Bois's (2007)
stance triangle, and Li Wei's (2011) Translanguaging Space. Envoicing emerged
as the dominant macro-strategy across all three subjects, with Stance and
Identity as the primary interactional functions. The near-total absence of
repair-oriented functions indicates that translingual negotiation in this
context is performative rather than compensatory. These findings extend Du
Bois's alignment dimension into translingual media contexts and reframe
Translanguaging Space as a spectrum of identity construction practices rather
than a singular phenomenon.
Keywords: translingual negotiation, media
discourse, stance, identity, Indonesian public figures, translanguaging.
