General Lecture "CAPLIN (Cakap Applied Linguistics)" 2026

On August 13th, 2026, Professor Andy Boon from Toyo Gakuen University, Japan, was invited to give a general lecture. The lecture was held at Atma Cultura in Semanggi campus of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia and was moderated by Dr. Dhion Meitreya Vidhiasi, M.Hum. from Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. 

The lecture was divided into two sessions. The first session is entitled "English Learning Motivation in the Age of AI: Insights from Japanese University Students." In this session. Professor Boon shared his result of study on Japanese students' motivation in learning English amidst the advancement of AI. He found that AI did influence the students' English learning motivation in positive ways. Therefore, rather than viewing AI as an obstacle to English language learning, English teachers should teach the students on how to leverage AI as learning aid and how to use AI responsibly. 

The second session is entitled “AI-Mediated Cooperative Development: Supporting Teacher Reflection through Generative AI.” In this session, Professor Boon talked about how AI can be used as a support for teachers to reflect on their teaching process. During the reflection practice, teachers can assess past lessons and core beliefs to refine their craft and plan strategic next steps, and the benefit of this practice can be improved further through interactions. However, Professor Boon highlighted the challenge in finding fair and non-judgmental peers to facilitate the interactions in the reflection practice. Thus, he recommended using AI to simulate a non-judgmental interaction partner. He shared the experience of an English language teacher in Japan who utilized ChatGPT as a reflection partner and showed how ChatGPT facilitated the reflection process (see Boon & Boon, 2026). 

The whole lecture lasted for two hours with occasional questions from the onsite and online audience. At the end of the lecture, Professor Christine Manara, Ph.D. as the head of the Doctoral program of Applied English Linguistics gifted a token of appreciation to Professor Andy Boon, and the audience took photos together with Professor Boon before officially ending the lecture.
