Symbolic Convergence in Interaction and Collaboration

In his scientific oration Prof. Dorien argued the importance of communication in symbolic convergence in interaction and collaboration. In the course of his academic career, Prof. Dorien has developed two models of communication that are of concern to and developed by other academics.

Collaborative Social Responsibility Model, is a communication model by Prof. Dorien, who has obtained intellectual property rights, is widely used by other researchers to develop their studies, and by practitioners to develop strategies and implement organizational and corporate communications programs.

The second model developed is the Cross-cultural Communication Competencies Model which is the result of research with Dr. Yohanes Temaluru and Drs. Domi Dolet Unaradjan, M.A. in 2015 in the context of organizational communication. This model was first presented at the International Conference of Cross Cultural Communication at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. Along with the development of the digital environment which also gave birth to digital culture, this model is currently in the process of further development.

"Collaboration across disciplines has also been carried out with learning that enriches understanding of the significant role of communication in various issues, especially economics, health, education, and global issues, such as climate change, environment, and sustainability." said Prof. Dorien.

A more macro context is also disclosed including the role of communication in understanding knowledge management more broadly, social capital, and social engineering to be able to explain complex and confusing interactions in the digital realm and the ethical challenges that accompany it.

"The availability of big data as a form of digital trace, the importance of social and communication network analysis to increase more positive social participation, stakeholder mapping, issue management, and crisis identification, is a trend in communication studies that must continue to be explored to contribute solutions to national and global issues while still basing the ethics of communication in the interactions that occur." said Prof. Dorien.

Furthermore, Prof. Dorien who is a Professor of Communication Science from the Faculty of Business Administration and Communication Sciences, Atma Jaya Catholic University, highlighted the issues of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) which ensure fair administration and equal opportunities for all.

Prof. Dorien emphasized how the central role of communication is in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which is the umbrella for efforts to deal with global issues. "Communication on this issue aims to reduce, if not eliminate, suspicion and discrimination on an individual or group basis."

At the organizational level, Prof. Dorien referred to The 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer which shows that the biggest challenge today is identifying opportunities to build trust, unity and common goals, as well as preparing guidelines for CEOs and other social leaders to build cooperation in a polarized and fragmented world.

"Understanding this, communication is the key." said Prof. Dorien

Monte Carlo Simulation Computational Statistics

In the second scientific oration session, Prof. Stanislaus recalled how developments in information technology are now increasingly bringing us into the world of VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous). And Monte Carlo simulation can be a valuable tool for organizations to manage risk and make decisions.

“Monte Carlo simulation can be used in finance to model and analyze portfolio risk, to estimate potential returns on investments, and to determine optimal asset allocation.” said Prof. Stanislaus.

Monte Carlo simulation has been applied in several fields, namely, finance and investment, renewable energy, manufacturing, physics, chemistry, environment, transportation, and information technology.
