Atma Jaya Catholic University student wins award in Harvard World Model United Nation 2023

Jakarta, 5 April 2023 - Two Indonesian students, Adella Suwandhi from Atma Jaya Catholic University (Unika Atma Jaya) and Rifki Saputra from Jember University, won the Diplomacy Award as Legal Committee at the Harvard World Model United Nation (MUN) 2023 event in Paris, France, in early March.

Harvard World MUN is a simulated United Nations (UN) assembly that attracts more than 2,000 participants from 110 countries each year, and is recognised as the largest international MUN event of its kind.

As Beswan Djarum (a term for Djarum Scholarship Plus recipients) who chose International Exposure, Adella Suwandhi and eight others from various universities in Indonesia had the opportunity to participate in MUN, of course by going through a series of selections first.

Adella and Rifki were paired as a double delegation for the legal committee. They both managed to outperform 186 participants from various countries competing in the same committee when discussing the issue of Non-Self-Governing Territories as representatives of Turkey.

For two months starting from the beginning of 2023, every weekend the delegates from Djarum Foundation who participated in the Harvard World MUN met together at PT Djarum's headquarters to follow The Complete Delegate programme as a form of training to mature themselves before competing.

In the programme, they learned a lot about world politics and economics, they also did intensive simulations as one of the forms of preparation, "because the majority of us have never participated in Model United Nation, so we don't fully understand if we don't practice directly", said Adella who was also the Djarum Foundation Head Delegate who went to Paris in the competition yesterday.

Through the programme, in addition to understanding about relations between countries, the delegates' knowledge is also opened up to various global political, legal and economic issues, learning to negotiate, public speaking, and creating scientific writing to support their performance when competing, given that they need to write the necessary supporting documents.

Adella Suwandhi is an active Communication Studies student at Unika Atma Jaya who has served as a Laboratory Assistant for 2 years. During her tenure, Adella had quite a few projects that she worked on, which made her spend a lot of time in the Communication Science Laboratory.

Her achievement in the competition yesterday did not escape the maximum support from the Head of the Communication Science Laboratory, Alfonso Harrison. Adella admitted that during the registration process for International Exposure, Alfonso helped her a lot, especially in terms of checking essays and video-making materials.

Besides Adella Suwandhi, there is another Unika Atma Jaya student who was also delegated to participate in Harvard World MUN 2023, namely Shannice Fidelia Akwilla from the Faculty of Economics and Business.
