A Lecturer in Faculty of Psychology Published in Lancet Psychiatry About Internet Based Therapy

Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in the world. In Indonesia, around 3.7% of the population of Indonesia have go depression, however people who work in the field of mental health are still very small and uneven in Indonesia. Retha Arjadi, M.Psi., Psychologist, one of the lecturer In the Faculty of Psychology Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia and also a doctoral candidate at the University of Groningen, sees that internet-based therapy could solve this problem. As part of her doctoral research, Retha studied the effectiveness of behavioural activation therapy for depression delivered with counseling assistance from lay counselors compared with psychoeducation of depression without counselors. As a result, the group who received behavioural activation therapy with counseling from lay counselors have lower level of depression greater than those who only get psychoeducation.

 

The results of this study is published in one of the best journals in the field of health, especially mental health, namely Lancet Psychiatry. Based on Journal Citation Report 2017, Lancet Psychiatry has Impact Factor of 15.233 and Scimago Journal Rank score of 5,247. Lancet Psychiatry is also known as the Q1 journal in the field of health, particularly psychiatry and mental health (rank 6) and biological psychiatry (rank 2). The research is the result of Retha cooperation with two supervisors, Prof. Claudi Bockting (University of Amsterdam) and Prof. Maaike Nauta (University of Groningen), as well as collaborators from various universities. So far, it is known that this article is the first article to examine internet-based psychological therapy in developing countries and particularly in Indonesia, and it is expected to be a reference for researchers who want to examine the effectiveness of Internet-based interventions in developing countries.
