The winding of thread in small-scale garment industries is still processed manually. A discrepancy between the length of the wound thread and the desired length is usually detected. To solve the problem, the industries need an accurate and efficient device to wind the thread. This paper discusses a device that can execute the winding of thread on two 6,4 cm bobbin size sequentially. The device can measure and detect the broken thread during the winding process. An optocoupler is used for measuring the length of thread and detecting a broken thread. The microcontroller AT89C51 is used to control the process of the system. Tests show that the device can wind the thread in with a constant length, and the length of thread measured differ not more than 0.3% of the desired length.
