Traffic jam in big cities is becoming a complicated problem which does not only cost us highly valuable productive time and fuel, but also pollutes the air. Junctions are especially prone to traffic jam and accidents due to the lack of stringent control for traffic lights. To overcome this problem a traffic lights controlling system which adapts to the number of vehicles on a certain junction is needed. By using a camera, the number of vehicles on a junction can be monitored, and based on this data a processing unit can control the duration in which a certain traffic light is turned green. The processing unit consists of computer and microcontroller and the programming languages used are Basic and Assembler. Results show that the processing unit can succesfully control the traffic light to adapt to the number of vehicles in queue.
