Mesa completed her Ph.D training in Microbiology at the University of California Davis as a Fulbright Scholar. She specializes in the molecular diversity of soil bacteria and their potential role in the decomposition of biodegradable plastics. She is also interested in studying how bacteria may have evolved the ability to degrade man-made aromatic pollutants. Mesa is an avid believer that learning should be a fun process. She is certified as an online instructor by the Learning Resources Network, USA. Following her experience in various innovative teaching development programs, including the American Society for Microbiology Leadership Grant for International Educators, Professors for the Future, and Teaching Assistant Consultant group, she engages her students and challenges them to express their creativity beyond the classroom. This results in the #InstaholicMicrobes and #InstaholicBacteria projects. In 2017, she initiated a Science Communication course to create a bridge of conversation between the science community and the public.
