1. IKW 101 Grammar Fundamentals

Grammar Fundamentals is designed to present learners with basic grammar in natural contexts along with natural communicative speaking and writing learning tasks. Learners will be guided to figure out the meanings and functions of the target structures as well as the formations of the structures. The learning tasks are learner-centered and designed to raise learners’ awareness of the target structures. In addition to providing learners with grammar learning strategies, the course will equip them with communication strategies that can help them use the taught grammar meaningfully and communicatively beyond the classroom, which is the main goal of this course.

2. IKW 103 Listening & Speaking Fundamentals

This course is aimed at developing students’ basic listening and speaking abilities through various types of activities in everyday contexts. By the end of this course, the students are able to communicate confidently, fluently and accurately in non-formal settings by applying appropriate listening and speaking strategies. In addition, students are expected to incorporate critical thinking when expressing ideas.

3. IKW 105 Reading & Writing Fundamentals

This course aims at enhancing students’ reading skills and strategies as well as developing their competence in how to write good sentences and transform them into a paragraph with clear organization and coherence.

4. IKW 107 Extensive Reading on Fiction

The overarching goal of this course is to build up students’ language competence in general. Fiction is selected as a focus in this course as it consists of everyday language and interesting stories. To achieve this goal, students have to pick their own reading materials on fiction such as short stories, read them on their own outside the classroom, and present to the class what they learn from and think of the stories they have read. By the end of this course, it is also expected that students will enhance their reading fluency and develop their habit of reading fiction.

Mata kuliah ini bertujuan membangun pemahaman, kesadaran dan partisipasi mahasiswa sebagai bagian dari penduduk dunia yang ikut bertanggung jawab meningkatkan dan menerapkan nilai-nilai positif melalui pendidikan. Nilai-nilai positif ini akan menciptakan kesatuan dan saling ketergantungan antarindividu dalam sebuah masyarakat yang menghargai keragaman budaya, keadilan sosial dan hak asasi manusia. SEMESTER 2

 

 

1. IKW 102 Communicative English Grammar

This course is designed to build the English grammar skills of pre-intermediate level students in the English department in order to prepare them for their academic work in English. The course is still focused on four basic features of the English language: nouns, verbs, modals, and prepositions. The main approaches employed in this course are cognitively and sociocognitively oriented, which are distinct from previous approaches. In accordance with these approaches, the methods will include analyzing semantic and pragmatic aspects of the target forms and raising learners’ awareness through tasks and discussions. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to develop the knowledge and skills to use English grammar meaningfully and contextually.

2. IKW 104 Listening & Speaking in Academic Context

This course focuses primarily on improving students’ fluency and accuracy on speaking and listening of spoken discourse in academic contexts. It provides students the opportunities to comprehend monologs and dialogs that occur in academic settings, such as class discussions and presentations, lectures, and seminars, and produce appropriate responses accordingly.

3. IKW 106 Expository Writing

This course prepares the students to write an expository essay consisting of at least five paragraphs. It emphasizes the rhetorical patterns of cause and effect and comparison and contrast to enhance students’ critical thinking in writing logically. Students will learn the basic characteristics of its texture, mechanism in exploring and developing the ideas as well as in presenting and sequencing them on paper. By the end of the course program, the students are expected to write an approximately 600-to-750-word cause and effect and comparison and contrast essays.

4. IKW 108 Extensive Reading on Non-Fiction

The main purpose of this course is to improve students’ academic language competence. Academic literature is selected as a focus in this course as academic features in it will be useful for students to succeed in their academic life in college and beyond. To achieve this goal, students have to pick articles from four sets of articles from selected science magazines and read them outside the classroom. In the classroom, they demonstrate what they learn from and think of the texts they have read. By the end of this course, it is also expected that students will enhance their reading fluency and develop their habit of reading academic literature.

5. IKW 110 Developmental Psychology of Learner

Mata kuliah ini berisi tentang pembahasan perkembangan peserta didik yang meliputi: pengertian perkembangan dan pertumbuhan serta perbedaannya; prinsip-prinsip perkembangan; teori perkembangan; aspek-aspek perkembangan manusia; serta tugas, serta karakteristik, dan tahapan perkembangan (kanak-kanak awal sampai dengan dewasa akhir/usia lanjut).

Mata kuliah ini membekali mahasiswa dengan pengetahuan tata bahasa Bahasa Indonesia  yang berfokus pada penggunaan imbuhan yang membentuk verba dan nomina, dan pada penggunaan konjungsi yang tepat. Mahasiswa diharapkan mampu mengenali bentuk dan makna imbuhan, mengklasifikasikannya sesuai dengan maknanya, membuat kalimat dengan menggunakan verba atau nomina tersebut dalam konstruksi kalimat aktif atau pasif, serta mampu membandingkan fungsi penggunaan konjungsi dan menggunakannya dalam konstruksi kalimat yang benar.

1. IKW 201 Pedagogical English Grammar

This course is aimed at developing students’ competence, knowledge, and skills in using and manipulating the grammatical patterns related to the structures of:

a. (1) Clauses (Dependent and Independent), (2) Active and Passive Sentences, (3) Adjective Clauses, (4) Noun Clauses, (5) Adverbial Clauses, (6) Conditional Clauses, and (7) Gerunds and Infinitives.

b. (1) Mixed-Type Conditional Sentences (2) Wish Clauses; (3); Subjunctives; (4); Participial Phrases; (5) Adverb Phrases; (6) Abstract Noun Phrases; (7) Appositive Phrases; and (8) Absolute Constructions.

2. IKW 203 Public Speaking

This course is designed to help students become an effective and confident public speaker. A broad overview of public speaking and its traits will be introduced in the first few meetings. In subsequent meetings, students will have opportunities to prepare and deliver their speeches in front of the class and public audience. In particular, this course involves students in the process of speechmaking and performing a clear and engaging speech.

3. IKW 205 Critical Reading & Writing

This course prepares the students to write an argumentative essay consisting of 2500-3000 words. The course will also provide a reading training that will make students familiar with scientific essays published in academic journals, enable then to identify the main features of those scientific essays, and develop their reading fluency, skill and meta-cognitive and cognitive reading strategies for comprehending scientific essays. Students will also be trained to discover meaning through engagements with reading the given essays so that they will be able to develop ideas for the topic for their own academic essay. In writing the academic essays, students will get practices in organizing components of essays to form logical arguments. These emphasize the rhetorical patterns of an argumentation to enhance students’ critical thinking in writing logically. Students will learn the basic characteristics of argumentative essays and the mechanism to explore, organize, present and sequence the ideas in a paper. By the end of the course program, the students are expected to write an argumentative essay on foreign language teaching topics consisting of 2500-3000 words.

4. IKW 207 Second Language Learning

Learning, developing and finally acquiring a second language is highly intricate processes which involve various learner-internal cognitive and affective abilities and social-external complexities in which learning occurs. As such, language teachers should be aware of these learning factors in order to assist learners to acquire the target language. Hence, the overarching goal of this course is to equip students with knowledge pertaining to how an additional language is learned. This will also serve as theoretical bases for sound language teaching methodology.

This course aims at providing the students’ competence with the knowledge about language, the relation between language and brain, as well as linguistics knowledge and its subfields, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Some linguistics cases, particularly in English and Indonesian languages, will be discussed in order to enhance the students’ linguistics competence.

1. IKW 202 Indonesian Culture & Multiculturalism

This course is designed to increase students’ awareness and sensitivity to Indonesian cultures and its multiculturalism. Students will learn about various aspects of culture starting from political system, economy system, socio-culturalism, law to education. Throughout this course, students will have the opportunities to discuss critically, analyse, and compare those aspects between indigenous cultures in Indonesia specifically and other cultures in general.

2. IKW 204 Oral Communication in Media

This course aims at enhancing students’ skillls in speaking and listening skills that will help them succeed in future courses and on the job. Students will learn how to construct and deliver messages and listen with literal and critical comprehension. Students will be equipped with strategies and the knowledge of doing and having an interview, moderating and engaging a group discussion and debating.

3. IKW 206 Research Report Reading

This course provides a rigorous reading training that will increase students’ familiarity with academic journal articles and enhance their reading fluency, skill and meta-cognitive and cognitive reading strategies. The topics of the selected journal articles are related to issues in English language teaching and learning and literature. The required readings, lectures, classroom worksheets and examinations are selected and designed to ensure that by the end of the semester students will be able to: (1) identify the main features of typical journal articles on ELT, (2) develop and use meta-cognitive and cognitive reading strategies to comprehend scientific writing, and (3) write a succinct summary of a research paper.

4. IKW 208 Language Teaching Methodology: Receptive Skills

This course, a companion to the Teaching Methodology: Productive Skills course, explores techniques of teaching  receptive skills, namely listening and reading in a second or foreign language (L2) using a methodology that considers language as a dynamic system. This system sees second language development as “a process that takes place through interaction between the individual and her environment” (deBot, Lowie, and Verspoor, 2007: p. 10). Thus, the course emphasizes language comprehension as meaning-making activity that takes into account learners’ cognitive processes, affective and motivational resources as well as external factors such as the environment surrounding the learners. Students in this course will first review the role of input in language learning, the ideal conditions of learning and cognitive and socio-cognitive theories on second language acquisition. Then, students will be introduced to a wide-range of techniques that can be used to teach reading and listening to learners at different school levels. Students will then analyze some published listening and reading materials. Near the end of the course, students have to create their own speaking and reading tasks that are appropriate and suitable for teaching learners from different age groups. After the completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Explain the important role of input; 2. Explain ways to help learners overcome their difficulties in comprehending the target language; 3. Explain the steps to create meaningful listening and reading tasks; 4. Develop texts and conversations that are suitable for listening and reading task models; 5. Construct listening and reading tasks for use in the classroom.

1. IKW 301 Research Methods in ELT

This course is intended to introduce the elements of doing basic research in English Language Teaching (ELT). Throughout the semester there are at least two major goals that will be covered. The first one will be to expose the students to the basic framework of research planning and preparation. The second one will be to address the students’ ideas for a research proposal that can be potentially turned into a research paper or a thesis. By the end of the course, students are expected to be familiar with the basic elements required for conducting scientific research and are able to apply their knowledge by writing a research proposal on ELT (and later writing a scientific paper or a thesis to complete their studies).

2. IKW 303 Language Assessment

This course introduces basic knowledge of language tests and the main principles of test constructions. It discusses various types of tests, their functions for teachers and students, characteristics of a good test, as well as item types.  It puts an emphasis on the various ways to construct classroom tests (formative and summative tests), covering two language elements (grammar and vocabulary) and four language skills as the class is intended to train the prospective primary and secondary school teachers of English. In addition, students will be exposed to different scoring criteria and techniques of assessing those language elements and skills for primary and secondary school learners. They are also assigned to design and develop tests with different item types during the course work.

3. IKW 305 Teaching Indonesia as a Second Language

Mata kuliah ini memberikan pemahan mengenai prinsip-prinsip yang mendasari metode pengajaran bahasa Indonesia bagi penutur asing (BIPA). Mata kuliah ini juga membekali siswa dengan teknik-teknik pengajaran empat keterampilan berbahasa: menyimak, berbicara, membaca dan menulis; dan komponen bahasa, yang meliputi kosakata dan tata bahasa. Mahasiswa juga belajar teknik mengintegrasikan budaya serta teknik mengajar BIPA integrasi, Mahasiswa berkesempatan untuk melakukan observasi kelas BIPA untuk memperoleh gambaran mengenai tpenerapan teknik-teknik pembelajaran BIPA yang telah dipelajarinya dan mempraktikkan teknik-teknik yang dipelajari dalam kegiatan pembelajaran yang sederhana.

4. IKW 307 Curriculum & Materials Development

This course aims at providing the students’ competence with the knowledge about curriculum in general, including the syllabi for language teaching, English curriculums especially those for primary school (SD) and junior, senior, and vocational high schools (SMP, SMA, dan SMK). This course also covers the principles of material development. The students will use their understanding of these principles to develop English materials for primary school to high school levels. This course also equips the students with the ways to develop instructional materials and class syllabuses for RPTRA classes in accordance with the related curriculums. Furthermore, it aids the students to analyze and develop the current English syllabus and prepare lesson plans for the high schools in order to be set for micro-teaching and teaching practicum at schools, as well as to apply them to teach in RPTRA classes for primary school, junior, and senior high school (SD, SMP, and SMA) students. In line with the process of learning the curriculum and material development, the students will implement their knowledge and what they have learned to teach at RPTRA.

5. IKW 309 Introduction to Literature

This is an introductory course in literature, comprising critical analysis of notable works in prose fiction, drama, and poetry. This course will expose students to the basic elements of each genre. Students will learn what makes a piece of writing become “literary,” as well as the terms and devices needed to read and understand literature. Students will gain insight into the variety and complexity of human life through reading literature which reflects human struggle with themselves, their environment, and their society.

This course is designed to increase students’ awareness and sensitivity to cross-cultural issues. Students will learn about various aspects of culture such as values, communications, beliefs and social relationship and see how those aspects are manifested differently in each culture. 3. IKW 306 Learning Assessment

Mata kuliah ini bertujuan membekali mahasiswa agar memiliki kompetensi mengenai pengertian, ruang lingkup, ciri-ciri, dan prinsip-prinsip penilaian pembelajaran khususnya kompetensi mengukur pencapaian hasil belajar. 4. IKW 308 Micro Teaching

This course prepares the students for the internship program by observing teaching performance in a video and in a real school or informal language learning institution setting. The first half semester is intended to give the illustration about how to develop interaction with the children and manage the class through recorded teaching model and real classroom teaching at school or informal language learning institution. This course also provide the occasion for the students to do practice teaching in a classroom setting with their course mates as the students, and to develop related lesson plan for the teaching.

5. IKW 310 Media & ICT for Teaching

This course develops competences in infusing basic familiarity toward media and technology with their application for English Language Teaching. In particular, students will be equipped with the knowledge and practice their skills on the use of Microsoft Office utility programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), pedagogy-supportive programs, as well as the social media to further enhance teaching-learning experience. In addition, students are challenged to construct creative and innovative English language teaching media that can be adopted in a real classroom context.

6. IKW 312 Teaching English through Literature

This course explores the characteristics of literary genres to be used in teaching English. The course firstly differentiates between the “study” of literary work (in literature study) and the “use” of literary work (in language teaching). The use of literary work focuses on exploiting literary works as language teaching media and materials. Students will learn how to exploit literary texts and use of dramatic techniques in teaching various aspects of English (e.g. grammar, speaking, writing, etc.). At the end of the course, students will be able to adapt, develop, and exploit literary texts for language teaching purposes.

This course will introduce students to translation studies and the practical skills required to become a translator. On completion of the course, students will be able to translate texts in a variety of fields from English to Indonesian and Indonesian to English and address various issues in translation.

1. IKW 401 Seminar on English

This course aims to provide students with a wide variety of competence dealing with applied linguistics or literature. In particular, it sheds light on the link between theories and practice in the research on foreign language teaching or literature milieu. Equipped with this knowledge, students are to write a research proposal on a particular topic and to present it in class.

This course prepares the students for an internship program at a primary school. It has two goals. First, it aims to develop students’ awareness of the dynamics of real-setting teaching. It then guides students to convey the lesson meaningfully and handle class tactfully by utilizing their reflections. Secondly, it is intended to familiarize them with school culture and instill a sense of teaching profession.
